Colour Your Thatched Cottage The roof of this cottage is thatched with golden coloured reeds or straw. Many old cottages were made of stone or mud and painted with whitewash. Why do you think there was a 'half-door' into the house? The doors and windows were often painted red. Irish cottages were heated by a turf fire. Turf is the top layer of boggy soil held together by grass and roots.
